I spent it all on clothes by the looks of things...

7 Outfits for Unpredictable August Days

If you’re not lucky enough to be abroad enjoying more settled weather, you will be aware that August in the UK can be a weird old month. I kind of like it, though – it keeps you on your toes. Will there be torrential rain in the morning? Yes, there might very well be. But could it then be 28 degrees by 4pm? Well, yes, that might happen too. Always have an umbrella, a pair of sunglasses and some SPF close to hand to cover all bases.

You might also need a light sweater or jacket in the evening, so pop one in your summer tote bag. I find I end up carting around far more stuff in summer than I do in winter.

Here’s a fairly random selection of outfits to think about this month.

KHAKI PANTS RULE OK

I know we call them trousers in this country, but khaki pants just sounds better. I’m sure you all have a pair of these somewhere. For me, they’re a wardrobe staple that everyone should have. Wear with a simple vest top and an open shirt. Add a statement necklace to stop it looking TOO simple.

  1. Uniqlo Halter Neck Sleeveless Bra Top
  2. Rixo Ischia Beaded Necklace
  3. Ray Ban Mega Wayfarer Sunglasses
  4. ME + EM Cotton Stripe Crop Shirt
  5. ME + EM Washed Silk Parachute Trousers
  6. M Hulot Hilda Leather Tote Bag
  7. Adidas Samba ADV Trainers

SHORTS AND A SUMMER SWEATER

I love this time of year when it’s still shorts weather but you might need a light sweater in the evening. It brings back memories of summers spent in Cornwall when you desperately want to wear shorts because you’re on holiday, but the weather really isn’t quite warm enough to discard your jumper.

  1. Monica Vinader Deia Huggie Earrings (use code KATEHMV20 for discount)
  2. COS Oversized Aviator Sunglasses
  3. Ivy Cotton Breton T‑Shirt
  4. Navy Grey Cotton Knitted Jumper
  5. Abercrombie Mid Rise Linen-Blend Bermuda Shorts
  6. Adidas Originals Gazelle Indoor Trainers
  7. Sezane Justine Maxi Basket Bag

POLO SHIRT AND PARKA

I predict the striped polo shirt will be big this coming season, so get in early. I have seen SO many popping up in the shops right now. It’s less UK rugby-style stripes this time, and more of a US college vibe. It’s right up my strasse and I have already bought this top. I also really love this one for when it gets cooler. Very Miu Miu but an eighth of the price.

  1. John Lewis Short Sleeved Striped Polo Shirt
  2. Uniqlo Blocktech Khaki Parka Jacket
  3. Toast Sculpted Seam Jeans
  4. Honey & Toast Frances Sling Bag
  5. Alohas Tb.490 Rife Trainers

THE LIGHT ANORAK

Not entirely sure you would call this jacket an anorak, but it’s a lovely colour and style and is definitely on my wish list this month. Of course it is, it’s red. I’m always drawn to that colour, as we well know, plus it would be good in the event of a light shower without making me too sweaty. Sold.

  1. Massimo Dutti High neck bomber puff jacket
  2. Joanie One Trick Pony Graphic Tee
  3. Abercrombie Mid Rise Barrel Jeans
  4. Tu Tan Leather Belt
  5. Liberty Iphis Dawn Large Tote Bag
  6. COS Leather Flip Flops

THE MAXI SKIRT & TEVAS

I won’t apologise for featuring these Tevas every other week during the summer. Not only are they very, very comfortable, but they’re also good in the event of unexpected rain as they’re basically just made of elastic and foam, so they stand up well.

  1. Massimo Dutti Frayed linen & silk bomber jacket
  2. Flat List Aviator Style Sunglasses
  3. M&S Ribbed Scoop Neck Bra Vest Top
  4. Anthropologie Maeve Poplin Dog Printed Midi Skirt
  5. Demellier The Midi New York Deep Tan Suede Bag
  6. Teva Women’s Voya Infinity Flat Sandals

SEMI SMART SHORTS

You still want to wear your denim shorts, but you’d like to be a little bit smarter? Just add a good pair of ballet flats and a linen blazer. I’m going to Paris next weekend and I might try something like this for the evening. I plan on eating a LOT, though, so will need to pack my looser shorts.

  1. H&M Printed T‑shirt
  2. Free People Beau Square Sunglasses
  3. H&M Linen-blend blazer
  4. Massimo Dutti Studded leather belt
  5. Mango Mid-rise denim Bermuda shorts
  6. Bibi Lou Studded Ballet Flats
  7. Souer Bellissima Mini Bag

JEANS AND A COTTON JACKET

We established last week how I’m always drawn to a patch pocket pair of jeans. I don’t have a dark denim pair as yet, but these look good. I’m already a bit excited about the autumn season. This outfit is a nod to that. I see lots of dark denim, forest green, burgundy and navy on the horizon. The boat shoe/loafer trend isn’t going anywhere either. I’ll do a new season round-up in a couple of weeks once everyone is back from their holidays.

  1. Black & Beech Organic Cotton T Shirt
  2. H&M Gold Frame Sunglasses
  3. Hush Barrel Sleeve Swing Jacket
  4. Reiss Leather Curved-Buckle Belt
  5. H&M Wide High Ankle Jeans
  6. Pixi On The Glow Blush Stick
  7. Miu Miu Denim and Leather Bag
  8. Pavement Leather Boat Shoes

There will a short break in proceedings next week as I’m away, but I’ll be back mid-August with some more fashion fun times.
