I think we can safely say that it’s officially jacket season. This makes me very happy, because I LOVE a good jacket – it adds that extra layer of interest to your outfit without covering it all up. Don’t get me wrong, I love the warmer months. But I also love that here in the UK we have ‘proper’ seasons.
Each season brings its own special excitement, and for autumn it’s that early chill in the air and the wonderful colours of the (frankly, out of control) Virginia creeper growing on our garden fence. It’s also the disappearance of annoying fruit flies and wasps in the kitchen. And, of course, the fact I can drink red wine in the pub again and stop trying to convince myself I actually like rosé. I mean, I DO kind of like it, but it gives me the devil’s hangover sometimes and can be very hit-and-miss in a public house. But mainly I like that we can wear one or two of these wonderful trans-seasonal jackets.
LEATHER JACKET
I hate to tell my biker girlies, but that jacket style needs a rest this year. Of course, keep a hold of it if you have one, as you KNOW it will be back again in the future, but this season we are looking at a simpler style. There’s a bit of a resurgence of that 80’s favourite, the oversized leather blouson jacket. But this year we won’t be wearing ours with a puffball skirt and a pixie boot. Instead, we will try pairing it with some baggy jeans and a pair of simple boat shoes.

WAX JACKET
When I say ‘wax jacket’, what I really mean is a Barbour. Other wax jackets are available, of course, but let’s be honest: they’re never quite as good as the originals. If you own a Barbour, you’ll know how great they are – timeless styles, plenty of pockets, properly waterproof, and quality zips (which, in my opinion, are very important and the sign of a well-made jacket).
The outlay is pretty chunky if you buy one, but it’s an investment that will last you a lifetime – especially as Barbour offers repairs should you come a cropper with a rogue house mouse that decides to eat an entire pocket off your beloved jacket. This actually happened to me. I sent it over to the Barbour repair centre and (for a small fee) they fixed it, re-waxed it and sent it back looking as good as new.

BARN JACKET
Another thing I really like about autumn is the fact I can go back to wearing my ugly-but-extremely-comfortable yoga bras without fear of them showing under an open shirt or vest top. I say ‘fear’, but it’s not that I’m scared of them – I don’t particularly care about my bra straps showing. But now that the temperature has dropped, the full coverage can be safely hidden under more substantial clothing. Oh, and if you bought a barn jacket last year, get it out again now. They’re still very much a thing.

BLAZER
We covered quite a few blazers last week, but my favourite style for autumn is country casual checks. I’ll be wearing mine with corduroy and contrasting colours. I love the blue of this jumper worn with brown. Brown is very much the new black again for A/W 2025.

SHORT TRENCH
Or, indeed, a long trench – but a long trench is officially a coat rather than a jacket, so for today’s post we’re running with a crop version. If you already have a trench, you probably don’t need a new one. Unless, of course, you insist on having a trench in two colours, which is more of a want than a need, but isn’t all fashion a want more than a need?

WOOL JACKET
I’ve steered clear of suede jackets for this post, but I’ll be getting into them soon as suede is still a popular fabric of choice. It’s no good in the rain, though, is it? The same can be said for wool, but sheep hang out in the rain, don’t they? And Guernsey fisherman swear by those itchy jumpers even in a storm at sea. So let’s take a look at a couple of nice wool jackets that will take you into winter, too.

RAIN RESISTANT JACKET
Talking of rain, if a Barbour isn’t your bag and you have a dog or small children that need walking to and from school, you’ll want a rain jacket for those times – inevitably, at around 9am and 3pm when the heavens open at the exact moment when you have to go out. Uniqlo Blocktech, Rains, Stutterheim and Protected Species all make rain jackets that actually keep you dry without making you look like you’re embarking on a rambling tour of the Lakes. Which, to be honest, sounds like my idea of a good time these days, but not if there’s any camping involved. Nice B&Bs only.
